I am going to show you how to find and use keywords for your local business in just over 3 minutes. So, let’s get cracking!

The first step is to pop over to Google’s Keyword Planner on Adwords. It’s free to sign up, you don’t need to buy any ads. The important thing here is to set your targeting to your city, county or local area rather than UK wide. Ignore the competition column, it’s not relevant – it applies to ads not local SEO.

Then remove any keywords that aren’t relevant by using the negative keywords filter and download your list to use in a spreadsheet later.

Then we’re going to dig deeper. We’ll use alternative sources to find other key-phrases that people are using. Use a keyword suggestion tool. There’s several out there that you can use, mix and match it up. Use your main keywords and location, your service keywords and location, combinations of words and phrases.

Really dig in to the words that people are using to search for your type of business. I use Power Suggest Pro because it saves me so much time with the extra features. http://www.mylocalbusinessonline.co.uk/powersuggestpro

Once you have your very long list now of related words and phrases, pick them all up and pop them into Google’s Keyword Planner again.
Don’t be surprised if Google pops up an error message, just agree with it and say yes you want search volume. Don’t be surprised if Google only comes back with a handful search volume results for you because local search is low volume.

Then you want to open a spreadsheet. Import all of the keyword information you have just been researching all onto one spreadsheet.

Remove any irrelevant keywords that you have missed. Remove any duplicates keeping the search volume. Sort by search volume descending so you can see what words and phrases people are actually searching for.

Don’t get too technical. In regular keyword research we’d be looking at competition right now. In local search the volumes are quite low and the competition usually isn’t as fierce.

So we’re looking for themes of words that people are using in search. In my dog trainer example I’d say I was a dog trainer, not a dog behaviourist.

Choose keyword themes and phrases for each local business page you are going to create. You will be creating a localised page for each product or service that you offer.

If you provide the same service in several local areas then create several local pages. They must be unique. So these are local pages for local people. In my dog training example I’d create a page dog training classes in Garston Liverpool because people are searching for those words.

Use your keywords and phrases including locations in your:
* page title,
* headings,
* image names and descriptions and
* within the content of the page
never forgetting that this info is for people. Provide information people are searching for using language that they use and make it easy to read.

Basic Local SEO keyword research:
* discover the keyword phrases
* use the keyword phrases with search volume for the main focus on a page
* use the related phrases to back up that content.
