Why should you be interested in Local Search Engine Optimization (or #LocalSEO) for your business?
Because it’s kind of the low hanging fruit of S.E.O.

USER BEHAVIOR CHANGES
• We know that, since early 2015, most search now happens on mobile devices.(1)
• 4 in 5 consumers use search engines to find local information.
• Consumers search with their location and proximity in mind.(2)
• Consumers search for: store address, phone number, business hours, product availability, directions.
• 88% of those consumers who search for a local business visit it within 24 hours.(3)
• Consumer search is now mostly mobile and local.

SEARCH ENGINE CHANGES
• The Google Panda algorithm updates, with their strong focus on quality content, make organic S.E.O. incredibly harder by requiring truly extraordinary content.
• The Google Pigeon update of 2014, and its focus on relevance, gave better visibility to Local Directory Sites in Google’s search results.(4)
• Search Engines are now more mobile and local friendly.

THE CHALLENGES FOR ORGANIC SEO
Say there are only 10 competing businesses in your area. There are up to about 18 spots on page one of Google (on Desktop) if you count the organic results and the map pack. After removing Ads, Map Pack, Knowledge Graph, and very high Page Rank organic results, we may end up with about 8 spots.
10 businesses competing for 8 spots. 2 businesses that will be left out, just in your area.

But, you obviously want to target the larger metro area to bring in more search traffic.
Let’s say there are 5 areas in your metro, so let’s adjust the math:
5 business per area
X 10 competing businesses in each =
50 businesses competing for 8 spots

But look closely (at search results), What do you see?

Map Results.

Smartphone? Map results.

Tablet? Map results.

Consumer search is now mostly mobile and local.
Search Engines are now more mobile and local friendly.
You must optimize for mobile and local searches.
